Slave-worked latifundia drove Rome's smallholding citizen-farmers off their land. Masses of landless, statusless men — the proletarii — crowded into the city, and the century-long crisis over their fate (the Gracchi, then civil war) helped bring down the Republic. Mechanism: strip large numbers of men of role, land and status, and the resulting despair and grievance become political dynamite. Rome kept no suicide statistics — but it feared surplus, purposeless men as a threat to the state.

1990s
When the USSR dissolved, tens of millions of men lost work, status and structure almost overnight. Male life expectancy collapsed to about 57 years by the mid-1990s as suicide and alcohol deaths surged — one of the sharpest peacetime mortality shocks on record. Mechanism: a sudden loss of male role converts directly into mass deaths of despair, deepening the wider collapse. The despair channel is real, measurable, and fast.

Stress is scaled between 5 (healthy) and 30 (critical), weighted ×1.6. Framed in the Case & Deaton "deaths of despair" tradition. Figures are finalized on a lag; 2024 is provisional.
